General Turning Inserts for Aluminum (Positive-Rake Carbide Inserts - CCMT / DCGX / TCGX / VCGX etc.)
 

Kingdon's aluminum-grade turning inserts are precision-ground, positive-geometry carbide inserts purpose-built for machining wrought and cast aluminum, aluminum-silicon alloys, copper alloys, brass, zinc and other soft non-ferrous metals on CNC and manual lathes. Unlike our ferrous-material lines, these inserts start from an ultra-fine-grain substrate that is left uncoated or finished with a thin K-AU gold treatment - never a thick CVD stack - because coating buildup would round the edge and defeat the sharp shear action non-ferrous material needs.

The lineup is built around double-positive (11°-20° rake) insert shapes rather than the negative-rake styles used for steel and cast iron: CCMT (80° rhombic, general OD turning and light facing), DCGX (55° rhombic, finishing and profiling), TCGX (60° triangular, economical multi-edge finishing) and VCGX (35° diamond, copying and small-radius contour work). All inserts are held to ISO 1832 sintering tolerances and are interchangeable with standard positive-rake toolholders already on your customers' machines.

Key Features

 

 

  • Polished, razor-sharp cutting edge - the rake surface is lapped to a mirror finish so chips slide rather than stick, which is the single biggest factor in eliminating built-up edge (BUE) on aluminum, copper and zinc alloys.
  • Large positive rake / low cutting force - the double-positive geometry cuts with less power than a negative insert of the same size, letting the same insert run at higher spindle speeds and feed rates typical of non-ferrous production.
  • Open, un-restrictive chip groove - shaped for long, stringy aluminum chips rather than the short segmented chips of steel or iron, curling material away from the finished surface instead of packing against it.
  • K-AU gold finish or bright uncoated option - the AU treatment lowers the coefficient of friction at the chip contact zone for silicon-rich aluminum alloys, while bright uncoated inserts suit pure aluminum, copper and brass where any coating would dull the edge.
  • Fine sintered-carbide substrate - higher hardness at the cutting edge than typical wrought tool steel, holding a sharp profile through long, high-speed non-ferrous runs; consistent lot-to-lot geometry under Kingdon's carbide QC system.
