Tungsten Heavy Alloy Properties

High Density

16.5-19.0 g/cm3 density of tungsten heavy alloys (tungsten nickel copper and tungsten nickel iron) are the most important industrial property. The density of tungsten is two times higher than steel and 1.5 times higher than lead. Although many other metals such as gold, platinum, and tantalum, have a comparable density to heavy tungsten alloy, they are either over expensive to obtain or exotic to the environment.

Radiation Absorption

Another considerable advantage of tungsten heavy alloy is radiation shielding which is also associated with the high-density property of tungsten alloy.
The radiation shielding effect of one material will go up along with a rising in its density. Due to this property, tungsten nickel copper has been widely used in radiation shielding applications. The radiation absorption capacity is one time higher than the lead-based material.

Hardness and Wear Resistance

Besides the high density and radiation absorption, many valuable properties associated with the high hardness and resistance have been used in a large number of applications. Tungsten heavy alloy belongs to refractory metal alloys which are extraordinarily resistant to heat and wear. Tungsten heavy alloy has been primarily used to make components that required high wearing resistance such as machining tools including lathes and dices.

Applications for Tungsten Heavy Alloy

Aerospace & Defense/ Military – Used in aircraft counterweights, missile components, and kinetic energy penetrators.

Medical Radiation Shielding – Ideal for X-ray and gamma-ray shielding applications.

Balancing Weights & Counterweights – Used in helicopters, racing cars, and precision instruments.

Industrial Machining – Essential for high-temperature molds and tools.

Oil & Gas Industry – Utilized in drilling equipment for enhanced performance.

Electrical– High voltage electrical contact, as electrodes used in resistance welding

Tungsten Heavy Alloy Production Process

Mixing

The tungsten powder is mixed with other metals in the desired proportions.

Pressing

The mixed powder is pressed into the desired preliminary shape, such as cylinders, blocks, etc.

Sintering

The pressed parts are sintered at high temperatures, forming a dense solid material.

Annealing

The sintered products undergo an annealing process to remove internal stresses and improve toughness and ductility.

Machining

Precision machining processes, such as turning, milling, and grinding, are applied to the sintered parts to achieve final dimensions and shapes.

Heat Treatment

The alloy undergoes additional heat treatment to optimize properties such as hardness, strength, or other physical characteristics.

Surface Treatment

If required, surface treatments (such as coating, passivation, etc.) are applied to enhance corrosion resistance, hardness, or other properties.

Types of Tungsten Heavy Alloys

Tungsten Nickel Iron Alloy (W-Ni-Fe): Tungsten Nickel Iron Alloy is the most common tungsten heavy alloy, known for its excellent combination of density, strength, and ductility. It is widely used in aerospace, defense, and medical applications.

Tungsten Nickel Copper Alloy (W-Ni-Cu): This alloy offers better corrosion resistance than W-Ni-Fe and is used in environments where exposure to corrosive elements is a concern. Tungsten Nickel Copper Alloy is also non-magnetic, which is beneficial for certain applications.

Tungsten Copper Alloy (W-Cu): This alloy combines the high thermal conductivity of copper with the high melting point and density of tungsten, making it suitable for electrical and thermal management applications.
