Pure Lanthanated Tungsten

Lanthanum Tungsten, often abbreviated as LaW or represented as W-La₂O₃, is not a distinct chemical compound but rather a dispersion-strengthened alloy. It is a composite material consisting of a tungsten (W) metal matrix infused with a fine, uniform dispersion of lanthanum oxide (La₂O₃) particles, typically comprising 1-5% of the total weight.

Product Introduction

Pure Lanthanated Tungsten (W-La2O3) Manufacturer | WL10-WL20 | Kingdon

Pure lanthanated tungsten - also written lanthanum tungsten, LaW, or W-La₂O₃ - is an oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) tungsten alloy in which fine lanthanum oxide particles (1–5 wt%) are uniformly dispersed in a pure tungsten matrix. Compared with pure tungsten, it keeps its strength and ductility at far higher temperatures, resists creep above 2000 °C, and emits electrons more efficiently.

Kingdon manufactures lanthanated tungsten wire, rod, bar, sheet, and machined electrodes in WL10, WL15, and WL20 grades - custom sizes from 1 pc, with a material certificate for every lot.

Introduction to Lanthanum Tungsten (LaW)

Lanthanum tungsten, often abbreviated as LaW or written as W-La₂O₃, is not a distinct chemical compound but a dispersion-strengthened alloy: a composite material consisting of a tungsten (W) metal matrix infused with a fine, uniform dispersion of lanthanum oxide (La₂O₃) particles, typically comprising 1–5% of the total weight.

It belongs to the class of advanced materials known as oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloys. The incorporation of lanthanum oxide nanoparticles significantly enhances the properties of pure tungsten, making it superior for demanding high-temperature applications.

Properties and Advantages

Lanthanated tungsten improves on pure tungsten in four key ways:

Higher recrystallization temperature

Pure tungsten becomes brittle after recrystallization. The La₂O₃ particles inhibit grain growth and raise the recrystallization temperature, so the material keeps its ductility and mechanical strength much longer under thermal stress.

01

Superior high-temperature stability and creep resistance

The dispersed La₂O₃ particles act as physical barriers that pin grain boundaries and dislocations, preventing deformation under mechanical load well above 2000 °C.

02

Enhanced thermionic emission

Lanthanum has a lower work function than tungsten. Lanthanum atoms at the electrode surface reduce the energy needed for electrons to escape, producing higher emission efficiency - a decisive advantage in electron sources.

03

Improved mechanical strength and durability

Dispersion strengthening raises hardness, tensile strength, and resistance to deformation at both room and elevated temperatures.

Applications

  • Electron microscopy and spectroscopy. Preferred material for electron gun cathodes and filaments in SEM and TEM instruments - higher emission current and longer service life than pure tungsten filaments.
  • Welding and plasma arc cutting. Non-consumable lanthanated tungsten electrodes for TIG welding and plasma torches: stable arc formation, better performance at high current, and slower tip degradation.
  • High-temperature furnace components. Heating elements, radiation shields, and support structures in vacuum and high-temperature furnaces where heat resistance and structural integrity are critical.
  • Aerospace and nuclear fusion research. Critical components for aerospace engines and plasma-facing materials such as divertors, where the material must withstand intense heat and particle flux.

Quality, Standard & Packing

Every lot of lanthanated tungsten is produced from high-purity tungsten powder with controlled La₂O₃ doping, then sintered, rolled or swaged, and stress-relief annealed. Each batch is inspected for density, dimensional tolerance, and surface condition, and ships with a material test certificate. Standard export packing in plywood cases protects edges and surfaces during transit.

How to Order

  1. Send us your order list - models, quantities, drawings, or the grade (WL10 / WL15 / WL20).
  2. We reply with a Proforma Invoice (PI) including shipping cost and payment terms.
  3. Confirm the PI and arrange payment; production starts after payment is confirmed.
  4. We ship the goods and send you the tracking number.
  5. Express delivery typically arrives 5–7 days after dispatch.

FAQ

Q: 1. What is lanthanated tungsten?

A: Lanthanated tungsten (W-La₂O₃) is an oxide-dispersion-strengthened tungsten alloy containing 1–5 wt% lanthanum oxide particles dispersed in a tungsten matrix. It offers a higher recrystallization temperature, better creep resistance above 2000 °C, and a lower electron work function than pure tungsten.

Q: 2. What is the difference between lanthanated tungsten and pure tungsten?

A: Pure tungsten becomes brittle after recrystallization at high temperature, while the La₂O₃ dispersion in lanthanated tungsten inhibits grain growth and keeps the material ductile and strong. It also emits electrons more efficiently, which is why lanthanated electrodes outperform pure tungsten in TIG welding and cathodes.

Q: 3. Which grades do you supply - WL10, WL15, or WL20?

A: We supply WL10 (0.8–1.2% La₂O₃), WL15 (1.3–1.7%), and WL20 (1.8–2.2%). Other compositions can be produced on request.

Q: 4. What forms and sizes are available?

A: Wire, rod, bar, sheet, welding electrodes, and machined parts such as cathodes and filaments. Custom sizes are produced to your drawing with MOQ 1KGS.

Q: 5. Is lanthanated tungsten suitable for TIG welding electrodes?

A: Yes. Lanthanated tungsten electrodes offer easy arc starting, stable performance at both low and high current, and longer tip life than pure tungsten - they are a non-radioactive alternative used in TIG and plasma welding.

Q: 6. Can you manufacture custom lanthanated tungsten parts?

A: Yes. Send a drawing, a sample, or your machine model number and we will produce to specification - including bent filaments, threaded rods, and cathode assemblies - starting from a single piece.

Q: 7. What is the lead time, MOQ, and packing?

A: MOQ 1KGS; standard lead time 10–20 working days; export packing in plywood cases. Samples are available on request.

Q: 8. Do you provide a material certificate?

A: Yes. Every lot ships with a material test certificate (MTC) covering composition and dimensional inspection. Additional testing can be arranged on request.
